It’s the summer holidays in South Africa and we find ourselves back at Satara, in the Kruger National Park. We encountered these Painted Wolves, or African Wild Dogs, on the road heading into the Park from Orpen Gate today. These are all Joubert’s photographs.

Great photos Joubert! We were also fortunate to see wild dogs on the same stretch of road when we were at Kruger last month. Such a thrill!

Seems there are two packs of wild dogs frequenting the H7 between Orpen and Satara, one each nearer either camp. Great that it seems their numbers are increasing here in Kruger, and wonderful for us visitors to get to see them more frequently!

It is good news that the wild dog numbers are increasing.
We were lucky enough to see members of both packs along that road in one morning. Members of the pack closer to Orpen were having a wonderful game with the remains of a recent kill. Not great for photo opportunities due to intervening bush but a lot of fun to watch all the activity.

Lekker stewige bekke wat hul het. Daardie kake kan beslis goeie happe uit hul prooi hap. Baie mooi fotos. Dankie vir die deel. Hoe lank gaan jul daar wees?

They’re fascinating creatures, Janet, with a very special social setup. They’re also excellent hunters and as a result often misunderstood and maligned as cruel and murderous.

Okay … pretend you cannot see the waves of envious green wafting your way. Satara is my favourite area! Beautiful photographs Joubert!

And it really is looking stunning here at the moment, Anne. Lots of early summer downpours has the veld looking verdant – like Ireland with thorn trees and marulas.

They look wild enough, but their colors are beautiful. I like the last photo–where they’re smiling for Joubert’s camera. 😉

Joubert had such a big mile on his face, Lois, that the dogs couldn’t help but smile back!
