We sneaked out of Pretoria at five this morning and headed for a quick weekend breakaway at the beautiful Golden Gate Highlands National Park.

Beautiful landscapes, but as always, I enjoy your wildlife images. Looks like a great place for a weekend getaway!

Thanks very much, John. At Golden Gate the wildlife often plays second fiddle to the majestic landscape, but for those who look carefully there’s lots to see on a smaller scale.

Looks like a great weekend getaway, Dries, but it didn’t feel like 5 am to me at all. 🙂 We’re at home for the weekend, as my husband is working most of it but he’s taking off on Monday for my birthday and we’re going to the Phoenix Desert Botanical Gardens. I haven’t been there for years and I’m greatly looking forward to it. I’m sure you’ll see a photo or two eventually but you won’t have to get up early to do so. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Happy birthday, Janet!
Getting up early is no chore when you’re heading for a place this beautiful.
Enjoy your special day at the botanical garden!

Thanks! It will be wonderful, I’m sure, and my husband’s been working so much that a day off for him will be a present, too.

Beautiful landscapes there! I really liked the last photo of the jackal. Nice coloring on its coat.

Our black-backed jackals are quite attractive, Siobhan, and their calls very evocative of the African night.
