It’s 21:30 and I am sitting next to the fence at Shingwedzi Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park, listening to the sounds of lions, at least one leopard, hippos, zebras, impalas baboons and elephants breaking the silence of the night while Marilize and Joubert are already sound asleep in the tent behind me. Today is the first day of our long awaited winter visit to Shingwedzi, and we’ll try to do a daily update when cellular signal allows.

Ons het die wonderlikste tyd daar langs Shingwedzi se draad gehad, Dina. Die naggeluide alleen het dit die moeite werd gemaak – insluitend die ratel wat een nag in die vroee oggend-ure deur die kamp gedraf het met n kind se fluitjie-speelding wat hy gesteel het; mens kon hom op n afstand hoor kom! Hy het seker gewonder hoekom hierdie prooi van hom nie wil vrek nie!?!? 😀

Baboons? That time of night? Probably leopard about. I find, around here, the only time I’d hear them at night is if they are disturbed. I’d sit up and listen and when they go quiet I go back to sleep.

Most definitely leopards causing the baboons a lot of distress, Petru – we could here at least two “roaring”right throughout the night on three of the five nights we’ve been here at Shingwedzi before tonight.
