A picture paints a thousand words, or so the often used cliche goes. And then sometimes Mother Nature dishes up a feast so grand that words alone cannot describe the experience nearly adequately enough. This recent sighting of a pair of leopards in the early light of 24 July 2012, on the Marula Loop near Skukuza in the Kruger National Park, ranks as one of my most memorable wildlife encounters ever.

Wow, just wow. I don’t know if I’d be able to contain my excitement in a sighting like this.
No one would blame you if you couldn’t, Josh! Even though we see the big cats, including leopards, fairly regularly while visiting South Africa’s wild places, it is always, always, an exhilarating experience!

These are beautiful cats…thought our leopard encounter was goodby, but these photos are spectacular.
Thank you Woolly Muses! This was probably my best leopard sighting ever, made all the more special by the fact that I was all alone with the two of them from start to finish, not another vehicle arrived on the scene before they moved off back into the bush.
That was almost the same with our lion cub sighting. Our other car arrived long after we had found them. I was told last week, by a student commenting on my leopard photos, “…you didn’t take that…” I felt a little angry until my wife pointed out that I should take that as a compliment. I nnow see the comment in a different light.
I’m really glad to read that you had such memorable sightings while visiting SA, and that you were able to get such terrific photos (you’ve already posted some and they are all first-class, and I’m sure there’s still many more in store)
