There must have been a special on offer on mud spa treatments at the uBhejane Hide while we were visiting the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park in March this year, and the Warthogs were queuing for their turn!

Warthogs! When we travelled in Kenya my son always said the warthogs were his favorites! But we did not see any having a mud bath!

Mudlicious! Great photos of these humorous fellows. I felt lucky to have seen them on safari. Thanks, Dries and Joubert!

They’re such characters, Jane, and it was great fun watching them enjoy their time in the mud.

Dit kan amper lekker lyk! Party mense doen dit as ‘n skoonheids-behandeling. Alweer iets om by die diereryk te leer 😂

Ek dink ook ons het dit by die diere afgeloer, Elsabe!

I admit to never having a mud bath, but they seem to be enjoying it. 🙂

I get my quota of mud treatments from the occasional muddy camping trip, John! 😀

Some humans also indulge in mud baths, so why not warthog? Nicely photographed!

Thanks, Hien! I bet you we humans got the idea from guys like these.

Looks like these warthogs are truly enjoying their ‘spa day.’ I know I always feel greatly revived after mine. 😉

I’m sure the price tag for your treatments is quite a lot heftier than this gang paid, Lori! 😀

Sien, ons moet leer by die diere … modder is goed vir ‘n mens (of dier dan) 😉. Ek’s ook mal oor daardie stertjies wat so kiertsregop staan – mooi foto’s julle!

Baie dankie, Corna.

I am pleased that you have devoted a post to the humble warthog! If one is patient and gives them the attention they deserve, warthogs reveal all sorts of interesting aspects of their behaviour.

You are right, Anne. They actually seem quite intelligent if you pay close attention to what they’re doing and how they interact with one another.

The warthogs are just like children, they love playing with mud. Don’t they? Thanks, D. and Joubert. 🙂

Rolling in the mud protects their skin from the sun and biting insects, so the behaviour definitely has a functional role, but there is no doubt in my mind that they enjoy it immensely! Thanks for visiting, H.J, and for your kind comment.

Tipies vark, lekker modderbad. Baie oulik daardie stertjie wat so kiertsregop gehou word as hul so wegdraf.
