Satara Summer 2021 – 20 December

We’re still having a wonderful time at Satara in the Kruger National Park. The toughest part of every day is deciding which route to take; even after a week here there are still roads around camp we haven’t travelled on! Today we set off in the direction of Olifants for our morning drive, and focused on the loop along the Sweni River in the afternoon.

OK. That snipe is a beauty. The detail in the face/eyes – just pops.. and that handsome white ‘bib’ looks like it could have been painted in an artist’s studio – and the patterns on the wings so crisp. Am in the museum and no one is here this week (visitors) so am painting without being disturbed – and able to catch up with a ‘quality ‘ visit to your area!

We’re very grateful that you could spend a few minutes with us, Lisa! All the best with your work – I am looking forward to seeing the results when we return from the bush.

Thank you very much, Anne. We found two snipes this day, and were thrilled at both sightings as I don’t think we’ve had better views of this elusive bird ever before.

I can see why it’s difficult to choose but apparently no choice is a bad one, Lovely! Seeing a snipe makes me laugh because taking someone snipe hunting is something we did a few times in high school/college and I think a lot of people didn’t realize there really were snipes.

Thank you very much, Lois. South Africa has a list of close to a thousand birds recorded within our borders, and about half of those are to be seen here in Kruger during the summer, when visitors from northern and equatorial regions arrive to spend their holidays here.
