The hills are alive… with butterflies!

I know this is a post that will be very pleasing to several of our regular followers!

With bright sunshine and warm autumn weather in the Drakensberg the butterflies come out to play in their numbers, and we go chasing them with camera in hand. These little beauties were all fluttering around Mahai in the Royal Natal National Park on Monday.

Dankie Dries! Ek het nou so pas meer bottervliegge hier gesien as wat ek al die lente hier gesien het!
We’ve had a few warm days here and a few hibernating butterflies have called around in the garden… less species and numbers than your gallery contains so it is indeed a gift you have shared with me!

When I’m out birding I am always on the lookout for butterflies and an opportunity to “capture” them digitally going about their short, busy lives. Beautiful photos, all of them!

Thanks very much, Don – I’m really astounded by the diversity of butterflies we have, and some of them are just as tricky to identify as the LBJ’s! 😀

I am one of those fans! I bought a book about gardening for butterflies to read through during lock down as I really want to be able to identify them. Thank you for sharing these lovely photographs of butterflies.

I’ve found butterfly-watching a wonderful new hobby, Anne, and I can really recommend Steve Woodhall’s “Field Guide to Butterflies of South Africa” published in 2005. It is available in e-book format and features almost all the 660+ butterflies found in the RSA.
