Maybe she was born with it? Maybe it’s…
This Southern Ground Hornbill we saw along the S30 between Skukuza and Lower Sabie in the Kruger National Park came close enough to our vehicle to allow us to appreciate her eyelashes from up-close!

Fantastic bird with big eyes and long eyelashes! I have a soft spot for birds with a character heads!
They’re very unique and special birds indeed!
Daar is baie wat sal dootslaan vir sulke wimpers!
Pretty lashes… I’m not so sure about the whole package! 😉
Jy moet maar die hele pakkie vat as wimpers jou ding is!
Gelikkig is wimpers nie my ding nie!!
Great close-ups – such charismatic birds. So sad that their numbers have declined so dramatically over the past few decades
It truly is sad, Carol, and just proves again how desperately needed our system of national parks and nature reserves are!
Yes these protected areas are indeed vital.
Ek sal my oogtande gee vir sulke mooi wimpers…pragtige foto’s, Dries!
Baie dankie, Dina!
What a treat. I would so love to see that bird in person! Your son is a very talented photographer by the way.
Thank you very much, Alanna – I will pass your kind comment to Joubert.
Wow! Those are some lashes..
Very impressive, Siobhan. Very.
Maybelline! I’d kill for those 😉
She would make a wonderful model for Maybelline, wouldn’t she?
Ongelooflik! Pragtige foto’s!
Baie dankie, Aletta!
Hulle bly net pragtig en dis elke keer lekker om hulle in die wildtuin te sien.
Vir ons ook so, dankie Una!
You got some great detail shots!
Thank you P J B! 2/3 of these are Joubert’s!
Oh, nicely done 🙂
I’ve told him how impressed you are!
🙂
WOW, for those grand lashes.
I think they are beautiful birds and am glad you were fortunate to see one up so close.
They’re also very intelligent, and I have a suspicion this particular bird has been fed from a vehicle at some stage, and that’s why she kept walking so close to us.
Wow really beautiful lashes. Great photos! All the more impressive knowing that these birds are a pretty rare sighting. Thanks for sharing!
They are rather scarce, but thankfully they still find protection in Kruger and hopefully you’ll get a few chances to see them when you visit!
Great lashes, but not the most attractive bird in the nest. 🙂 She certainly has an intense look, though.

What they lack in appearance our Ground Hornbills make up in attitude!
You are funny!!! Love that lost photo, especially. Excellent, Joubert.
Thank you so much, Lois!
She’s so gorgeous.
Absolutely, Tracy!
Striking looking bird! Good shots! 🙂
Thanks, AJ. There’s no missing our Ground Hornbills when they’re striding through the bushveld!
Oh WOW. They are wonderful lashes. 😀
Good enough for a make-up ad, don’t you think, Cee?
