We’ve arrived back at the Kruger National Park, and ended our day with a magnificent lion sighting near Skukuza; males, females and cubs crossing the road all around our vehicle.

Wow! I’m guessing he’s a young male from the length of his mane. How old do you think this lion is, de Wets Wild?
He’s a male in his prime Raja, one of two in control of this pride with a 3rd younger one accompanying them. I’d guess he somewhere between 5 and 8 years old. Interestingly, wild lions seldom have the very lush manes of those you see in zoos and circuses, as walking through thorn bushes really takes its toll!
I guessed wrong then…He is magnificent nevertheless. And you are so so lucky to see them in the wild like that. Thanks for sharing all your wonderful close encounters and adventures with us! I think I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again — coming here is like watching NatGeo channel or reading the mag, only better coz it’s free! š

Thanks Maurice! The lions came over a low sandbank as they were moving from the Sabie River towards the road, and that is where I positioned our vehicle beforehand, anticipating that they’d being moving through that spot. Right place at the right time!

I think I have read there are more than one kind of Lion. Do you know which one this is? it is such a great close up, I think it would help me learn more about them.
The two major groupings are African and Asiatic (Indian) lions, but in Africa you do get slight regional variations in appearance, and the very rare white lion “mutation” sometimes pops up in wild populations (there’s a number of them in captivity, but seeing a wild one is very very rare)
