Looking back at the fantastic places we stayed at while exploring South Africa’s wild places in 2014…

Summer in the bush: Hluhluwe-Imfolozi, 28 December 2014
We spent a considerable amount of time on our last full day at Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park stuck behind wide and heavy loads… The Park’s elephant population is obviously booming!

Summer in the bush: Hluhluwe-Imfolozi, 27 December 2014
What an awesome experience, witnessing one of Hluhluwe-Imfolozi’s wild dog packs hunt and kill! We’ll share more photos in an upcoming post.

Summer in the bush: Hluhluwe-Imfolozi, 26 December 2014
We were astounded by the prolific tree-climbing skills of Imfolozi’s lions, and how well such big cats can camouflage themselves in the tops of even rather small trees.

Christmas in the bush: Hluhluwe-Imfolozi, 25 December 2014
The sunrise over Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park on Christmas morning was particularly beautiful 😀

We hope all our friends here at de Wets Wild had a lovely Christmas Day.
Summer in the bush: Hluhluwe-Imfolozi, 24 December 2014
Today we moved “camp” again, to Mpila in the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park, our country’s oldest reserve and one of our firm favourites. This little white rhinoceros seemed particularly pleased that Christmas eve has finally arrived!

We also would like to wish all our friends here at de Wets Wild a blessed and merry Christmas!
Endurance
The African Wild Dog (Lycaon pictus, also known as the Cape Hunting Dog or Painted Wolf) must be the African mammal with the most stamina – they’ll easily cover distances of over 40km in a day, trotting along at speeds of around 10km/h, and when hunting can maintain speeds of 48km/h for distances of up to 5km (though they seldom need to chase prey that far before taking down their quarry). At full speed, they’ll easily reach 64km/h!
We witnessed these wild dogs chasing after a herd of impala in the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park during a visit in 2008.

Dialogue
Two photos, two photographers, telling the same story from different angles…

My photo, of Joubert eyeing the elephant through the back window of our vehicle

Joubert’s photo of the same elephant 🙂

Containers
Safely (well, relatively) packed into their tin cans, humans can explore the wild places of South Africa to their hearts content…

Extra!
Sometimes, you’re forced to get out of the car in big-five territory, for a little extra (unplanned) adventure, like I had to here in the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park 😀
