Today we moved base southwards, transferring from Satara Rest Camp to Skukuza Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park. Aside from some wonderful wildlife sightings we also drove through some of the worst fires currently sweeping through the area.

Interesting picture of the lion and hyena together.
Thrilling interaction to watch that, Anne. It was at Delaporte waterhole just a few kilometers south of Skukuza, just before gate closing time.
Each one of these images is an incredible picture that tells a compelling story.
The beauty of wild places like the Kruger National Park, where we are (supposed to be) mere spectators!
Oh, gosh. So this is not a controlled burn? I hope everyone is safe–both you and the animals!
No, this definitely wasn’t a controlled fire, Lois – last I heard the suspicion was that it was caused by a spark from a powerline and the strong wind created excellent conditions for the fire to run amuck. It was exciting if uncomfortable to drive through the fire and smoke. There was some damage to the airport building – mostly water damage from the efforts to keep the thatch roof from catching fire – and there’s sure to have been many smaller animals like insects that succumbed (proving food again to many kinds of birds especially) but we saw no larger animals that got hurt and heard no reports of injuries to the fire-fighters.
