Autumn Adventure – Eastern Natal Green Snake at Kumasinga Hide

While we were spending a full day at Kumasinga Hide in uMkhuze Game Reserve on the 21st of March, this lovely Eastern Natal Green Snake caused quite a stir among the human visitors to the hide. I should add that the fear was entirely needless, as this species is absolutely harmless to humans, although it will bite in self-defense if you try to pick it up. It was clear that this snake was very used to having people around his home as it wasn’t nearly as frazzled as the humans were…

Later in the day the snake returned to make another appearance. Owing to its relaxed disposition it was easy for us to get another few photographs before it moved off.

They are such elegant snakes and really agile climbers. It is amazing how they figure out that people in such a setting are not a threat and they take things in their stride (not that snakes stride!). Hopefully no human visitors were too rattled and people were content to keep their distance.

Up until this guy put in an appearance, the hide was quite busy with human visitors. By the time he decided to return to the vegetation besides the hide, the de Wets were the only people remaining…

Being a public holiday the hide was quite busy around lunchtime, but from about 15:00 that afternoon we didn’t have any company except ourselves. It’s a day we’re going to remember for a long time still.

As you know, Anne, our snakes are usually not anywhere near as confiding as this one was. It wasn’t something we expected to see at the hide at all, and in the end will be one of our most lasting memories of our day at Kumasinga.
