Satara Summer 2021 – 19 December

Not to brag, but it seems our days here at Satara in the Kruger National Park are just getting better and better and better… We did a circular route today – Satara to N’wanedzi, onwards to Tshokwane, and then back to Satara via Nhlanguleni and Muzandzeni. The encounters we had were magic.

Joubert gets the prize today – lots of good photos, but that hornbill – what a beauty! Does anyone in your family draw or paint? If not, goodness, so many amazing reference images … even for field notes when home…

this post has some great ones for drawing.. the buffalo would lend itself for a test – the ‘inside’ negative space inside the bull’s horns is basically a circle.. so lightly sketch one, then gauge where the second one would go.. and if you get the circle, then you have half of the horns drawn! By then your brain is shifting to seeing more nuances, and the rest falls in place – or should – unless there’s a snake crawling through the lower canopy or a giraffe sticking its tongue out – or a lion stalking its prey – – – alas it’s my biggest problem, how to stay focused on drawing when in the outdoors – too many distractions that are of more interest than my art!

You’d be glad to know that Joubert is actually very skilled at drawing wildlife and seldom forgets to bring his sketch pad and pencils along when we’re out exploring South Africa’s wild places, Lisa. I really should post some of his pictures – but then I would definitely be bragging! 🙂

Sjoe om ‘n luiperd af te neem is n voorreg! Wie het hom eerste gesien? Laat my terugdink. Ek het n kompetisie gewen klompie jare. Ingesluit was ‘n nagrit in Krugerpark.

Oh absolutely, Carol. Cruising around through the lush greenery at 20km/h, your senses serenaded by the sounds and sights and smells of Kruger, it is hard to imagine paradise being any different.

No bragging – just teasers for what is still to come. Actually, it is wonderful knowing that Kruger is not disappointing you. Enjoy the rest of your time there and take a lot more photographs. Joubert, I have to say that your eye is every bit as good as your Dad’s!

We really are having such a blessed time here, Anne. Something to see around every corner almost. And sharing the photography hobby with Joubert is another blessing in itself!
