During our drive through the Addo Elephant Park this morning we were fortunate to encounter this confrontation between an elephant bull and two spotted hyenas who were trying to hide the remains of their prey in a water trough.

How extraordinary and well captured. The water must have tasted pretty yucky after a while! I wonder if they were ever able to retrieve the remains.
Thank you, Carol! We did notice that afterwards no elephants would drink from that trough – they’d only sniff at the water and move on.

We’ve seen them on previous visits to Addo too, but never this dramatically!

Interesting! I suppose only the youngest of elephants might be a target of the hyenas. Of course, I have no idea. 🙂
Spotted hyenas especially are often underestimated, John. I would not bet against them taking advantage of an unguarded young elephant.
