The Small Orange Tip butterfly has a patchy distribution in South Africa, being found in portions of the Eastern Cape, most of Kwazulu-Natal and Mpumalanga, all of Limpopo, North West and Gauteng, the western Free State and extreme eastern districts of the Northern Cape, preferring the drier, more open, savanna-type habitats. They’re also found over much of the remainder of the African continent and also occur in southern Spain and the Arabian peninsula. Females lay eggs singly on a wide variety of plants from the Capparaceae family. Adults have a wingspan of 3-4cm and can be seen at any time of year.

Now you have me wondering – when the rare events of Sahara winds hit Ireland… will we maybe see the odd Spanish visitor?

“Exquisite” and “little” are both excellent words to describe this butterfly, thank you Carol. I was afraid the photos don’t really give an idea as to how small it is compared to similarly looking species.
What a lovely one! – I think I have come across these on the mountain before. I have only started to learn about butterflies recently though – or pay more attention to them. The fragile fluttery beauty of butterflies does make the world seem like a better place in these times for sure!
We’ve also only recently really awaken to South Africa’s incredible butterfly diversity and searching for them has certainly added another enjoyable dimension to our outings!

There is something about songbirds, butterflies and rainbows that make life good no matter where you are. Even the “sow bugs” I used to watch roll up into a ball when I tried to pick them up bring back pleasant memories.
That’s the thing with the natural world, Beth – the more we take time to study it and the more we come to connect with it the more its beauty is revealed!

Lovely butterfly and great photos… I am always fascinated by butterflies and always try to visit butterfly gardens whenever I can find them 🙂
Now that’s the kind of amusement park we really need; one where people can connect with nature on a deeper level.
