While exploring the mangrove swamps here at Umlalazi Nature Reserve this morning, this Pink-backed Pelican treated us to a low-level flypast.

Today was our last day here at Umlalazi. Tomorrow, we head for the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park. If we have a good enough connection well try to post a daily update from there as well.

painless and oh so easy! good luck y happy holidays!
Thank you very much for the support Lisa, and we hope you are enjoying a restful and blessed festive season as well!
Pelicans always remind me of flying dinosaurs!
Same here, Annette!
Wow! What a great photo!
Thank you, Lois!
Sigh. You must be having a great time.
We absolutely are, Tracy!
That Pelican will fly further for less fuel.
Sounds like a tagline for Boeing or Airbus, Hien!
Lovely shot of the flying pelican, and wonderful to see them. Hope you have a great time at Hluhluwe-Imfolozi
Thanks very much, Carol – as you’ll see our visit at HIP was off to an eventful start!
I hope that all the other interesting creatures you see will be outside your accommodation!
Hluhluwe-Imfolozi seldom disappoints in that category!
That’s true. We are looking forward to heading there in a few weeks’ time.
The Park is looking beautifully lush and green, you’ll love it even if the animal sightings are a bit harder to come by. Where will you be staying?
Last time we were there it was frighteningly dry with animals dying, so it will be a relief to see it lush. We will be staying in the tented camp at Mpila – the safari tents I think they call them. On our last trip it was sad to see at night the bright lights from the coal mine which are visible from the main Mpila chalets.
Yes, those lights are a stark reminder of an outside world we had to return to today, with much sadness… During our rambles through the camp we walked through the safari tent part of the camp, and they do look in lovely condition – actually, Mpila as a whole is looking great and we always find the staff there much more friendly and hospitable than those at Hilltop. I’m sure you will have a great time and can’t wait to compare notes when you return!
Thanks for the positive news re Mpila – good to know. We also prefer to stay at Mpila than Hilltop and we are looking forward to it. Will be nice to compare notes afterwards! Thanks.
Amazing and beautiful picture of the pelican!😊
Thanks, John!
