Muddy fun at Dries se Gat

“Dries se Gat” is one of our favourite waterholes in Mokala National Park, not only because I share a name with it but also because there always seem to be something interesting happening there.

During our latest visit to Mokala we arrived at the waterhole just as a big herd of 100+ buffaloes were making their way to the water, and could spend quite a bit of time watching the animals interact with each other while slaking their thirst and enjoying a mud bath.

If you’d like to learn more about Mokala National Park, why not have a read through the detailed post we did about the Park in 2016.

you’re amazing! a ‘normal’ person might get one good image and be forever grateful for that one image.. and you —- you give us every view possible, complete with personality of the animal/animals… thank you for this and many other posts that give us the opportunity to be with you via cyberspace!

Thank you so much for the very kind comment, Lisa! It is easy being passionate about the things you love, and we hope that shines through for de Wets Wild as well.

Thanks, Linda! African buffaloes are very aware of their surroundings, and distrusting and even downright hateful of anything that doesn’t belong there as far as they are concerned.

We also noticed that while watching them, Kim, and I think it is probably the ones that look the friendliest that you should be most careful of!

There is a photo blog mostly about Chinese culture, which featured these massive animals during a wedding. I did not count, but the number might be close to the group you photographed. Just let me say they were hearded into an arena and slaughtered–I am not sure why unless it was to feed guests.

Jip! Hy word 9 in Augustus, maar neem al fotos vandat hy 18 maande oud is. Sy Oom het vir sy 8ste verjaarsdag vir hom n ordentlike kamera gegee en nou is daar geen keer meer nie!

Thanks a lot, John. These are African Buffaloes – the only kind of buffalo indigenous to South Africa and one of the famous “Big Five”.

It’s named after a different Dries who was instrumental in the Park’s proclamation, Lois, but I will gladly be a godfather to it! 🙂
