SANParks has opened its newest accommodation offering in the Addo Elephant National Park: the luxurious new Nyathi Rest Camp. The new camp is set atop a hill with magnificent views from every spacious accommodation unit over the valley below and the rolling hills beyond, and a real possibility of seeing any of the “Big Five” from the comfort of your private veranda.

The camp offers eight 2-bed units, one 4-bed unit and two 6-bed units, each equipped with air-conditioning, satellite television, equipped kitchens, bathrooms with splendid views and private splash pools.

Amenities such as a restaurant, shop, fuel station and guided game drives are available at Addo’s main camp, an easy 20km drive away along sedan friendly gravel roads.

    Have you got a two bedroom chalet for two couples at Nyati Camp. Accompanying will be a teenager and a 6 year old who can sleep on a lounger. Is this available or possible. Would like 1st or 2nd weekend of May 2019. Regards R Gray

      You can’t go wrong with a stay at Nyathi, Marechia, and all the units really have splendid views over the valley, being built in a well-spaced row. The “river” you mention is really only a small ephemeral stream at the foot of the hill on which Nyathi is built, with densely vegetated banks, limiting your view of any water that might still be retained in a few isolated pools at the end of the dry season, when you intend visiting. Beyond it however is a wide open plain surrounded by wooded hills, and all the units really have an equally good view over it from their decks. To my mind the best unit, simply for its fantastic amenities and generous use of space both inside and out, is the 2-bedroomed Guest Cottage (code GC4 on SANParks’ booking site).

    Will be staying at Nyathi for 3 nights in Dec 2017, will give feedback afterwards. Normally stay in the main camp, but Nyathi just has a certain appeal about it.

    Thanks for the article and photos – being new accommodation, I can’t find a lot of info online. Do you know whether it is possible to access the main camp from Nyathi in the evening? I will be staying at Nyathi later this year and am trying to decide whether I should plan to self-cater the whole time, or whether I will be able to have dinner at the restaurant at the main camp and then driving back to Nyathi?

      Glad you found our post helpful, Rachel. Unfortunately you won’t be able to travel from Nyathi to the Main Camp outside of the “gates open” times, as both the camp’s gate and access road is closed at night. Don’t let that put you off visiting Nyathi though, the kitchens are well equipped and the patios with the braais have a wonderful view over the valley by moonlight!

    Hi there… are there any other photos of the inside of the units?
    Is the bathroom private with door that can be closed or is open plan – is there a show or just a bath?
    Place looks STUNNING from the photos I can see!

      Unfortunately I don’t have any more photos, but indeed yes it is private bathrooms with both a tub and a shower (and spectacular views!)

    Hi,

    Looks like a great place to stay but I would like to know if it’s suitable for small children? It will be our first time in Addo and I already have a booking at the main camp for 3 nights in the small (CH2) chalet but this looks very nice and there still is full availability in October… It does look tempting or would you prefer main camp with a 16 month old girl? My wife and I will be on a 4 week Cape Town/Garden Route roundtrip and Addo is part of the visit for 3 or 4 nights.

    Would love to hear from you as this report is about the only info I can find…

      Hi Michel!

      The units at Nyathi all have terraces raised a fair distance from the ground and the terrain around the back of the units is very rough gravel, not really conducive to a toddler enjoying herself playing around carefree. I would recommend you stick to Addo’s main camp where there’s loads more to keep her entertained while you are not out on a drive. Keep checking for cancellations in a bigger unit at the main camp, with still 5 months left to go you may well strike it lucky. We’ve stayed in a CH2/4-type unit with our son when he was 9 months old and it suited us perfectly.

        Thanks for your quick response and recommandation! If it was still only the 2 of us I would have booked Nyathi without any doubts but with a toddler it’s a different story and you confirm my suspicions of the camp not being very toddler friendly unfortunately. I guess the same goes for the Mathyolweni Camp? I thought about adding a 4th night and split it between Mathyolweni Camp in the South and Main Camp or Nyathi in the North but 4 nights Main Camp might be the best idea as it is more toddler friendly?

        I also like the Rondavel (HL2) because it overlooks the floodlit waterhole but I guess it’s to small with 2 adults and a child?

        My earnest advice to you would be to spend all your available nights in the Park at the Main Camp, Michel. And yes, the rondawels are lovely but will likely be a very tight squeeze for your family. Please do come back and tell us how your trip was when you return home? I know you’ll enjoy it immensely.

        Thank you again! I will follow your advice and stick at Main Camp, hopefully something bigger gets available… Before Addo I have 5 nights in Plett as I think there is so much to see and do in the area (Knysna, Robberg, Monkeyland, Birds of Eden, Storms River Mouth etc.) and after Addo 3 nights in Mountain Zebra, hopefully in one of the new luxury cottages. But like I said, I have some doubts about the 5 nights in Plett because I may want/need an extra night at Addo… Any thoughts on this? 🙂

        Have already seen a lot of the country on previous trips but now with our little girl it was time for Cape Town (2nd time), the Garden Route and Klein Karoo so looking forward to it very much as I think I’ve picked some great spots to stay along the way… 🙂

        Will let you know how it all turned out when I return! 🙂

      Absoluut asemrowend, Ineke. Dit is wel van die duurste van die selfsorg-akkommodasie in die Park, maar steeds baie goedkoper as die voldiens opsies wat privaat bedryf word.

    Now this is my idea of camping! They would call that glamping down here in Florida–Glamour Camping. I am all in for that. 😀 The Kings of Addo are simply stunning.
