Mpila, set high on a hill with sweeping views over both the Black and White Umfolozi Rivers, is the main accommodation base in the Imfolozi section of the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park. Apart from a single strand of electric wire strung high above the ground, designed to keep the elephants from coming into camp and digging up the water pipes, animals – including predators – have free access to the grounds. This of course make the place just all the more alluring to the de Wets!
This image of a spotted hyena licking our braai (barbeque) grid was taken on a previous visit to Mpila

We could live in this place for the rest of our lives, it’s one of our – if not THE – favorite places in SA!
For us it would be a hard choice between Mpila and Kruger’s Shingwedzi, Maurice.

Ek hoop julle het ‘n ou tjoppie of twee gelos vir julle kuier gas! 😉
I love love love Mpila. We stayed in the tents, what an experience. Hyenas watching my husband braai from a couple metres away as I took photos from the deck of the tent. Bush pigs causing a commotion trying to get up in the deck. Unforgetable.
We certainly share your love for Mpila, Kelly!
I love that sign, it’s like, beware of everything!
Good advice!
Wow! wildly entertaining that’s for sure! I guess it’s no different then us having Bears & Cougars wandering around our neighborhood! lol…
Definitely, Teresa! As long as we keep our common sense and treat them with respect, humans and wildlife don’t need to be in constant conflict.
Our younger daughter would love the photo of the hyena. 🙂

I remember how much she likes them, Janet!
Oh, goodness–so no sleeping outdoors in a tent!
Actually, permanently erected tents on wooden decks and with en-suite ablutions are one of the accommodation options at Mpila, and very safe. But sleeping under the stars, or walking around in the dark, would be ill-advised…
