Joubert and I have been planning a father-and-son camping trip to beautiful Kgaswane Mountain Reserve, and invited a few other dads and their sons to join us there this past weekend. It’s amazing just how quickly a weekend in the fresh mountain air surrounded by amazing scenery can fly past, especially when you have good company! I am also happy to report that we didn’t miss out on Kgaswane’s majestic sable antelope this time! Have a read here to learn more about Kgaswane.

Love to go wandering around with you in the wilds (virtually that is!) and i had no idea where Kgawane is situated. Now you’ve put it on the map for me. So great to read of the father/son adventures, i’m thinking there’s a tradition here?
Definitely a tradition for the de Wets, Liz, learnt from my late Dad. Joubert and I have had a couple such trips, and seems our group has just gotten bigger thanks to great friendships with like-minded dads and their boys.

Baie dankie Petru! Natuurlik gee ons glad nie om nie. Hoe meer mense Suid-Afrika se natuurskatte waardeer en geniet, hoe beter sal dit beskerm word vir toekomstige geslagte.
Die beskerming van ons skatte is so belangrik. ‘n Nuwe buurman wou ‘n piekniek plek bou oor die pad van sy huis, en selfs dit het ek teen kapsie gemaak! Ek wens mens kon keer dat enigsins iets nuuts gebou of verskaf word om ekstra toeriste in te bring. Ons het een aand na die Lone Falls gegaan, naby Sabie en die fosfor fungus is uitgewys. Dit gloei in die donker. ‘n Toeris gooi summier haar sigaret stompie daarin! Het haar kop afgebyt!
Is dit nie verstommend en walglik nie!

I don’t think there was a topic we wouldn’t eventually have covered, Petru, but then a very welcome downpour brought an early end to the deep discussions around the bush-tv.

That’s so true! I believe in today’s hectic life we need times like this to ensure our family bonds stay intact.
Good for the “boys” to get off on their own now and then. I hadn’t seen the sable before, a rather stunning creature.
