South Africa celebrates the 24th of September as Heritage Day, a public holiday. Of course, South Africa’s natural heritage is very close to the de Wets’ hearts, and so we’ve headed back to our beloved Kruger National Park for a few days (as if we needed an excuse 😉 )
The three of us are spending the night in Shipandani Hide, next to a tranquil pool in the Tsendze River, and kilometres away from the nearest other humans. As I’m typing this, Marilize and Joubert have already been lulled to sleep by the symphony of the wild African night; hippos bellowing metres away from the hide, scops owls hooting for attention, lions roaring in the distance and a myriad of crickets, frogs and bats chiming in.
Heaven.

Shipandani Hide

Feeling green ….. Another place to add to the bucket list 🙂
We had a wonderful night at Shipandani Liz and I’m sure you will too. It’s difficult to get a reservation there as it is very popular, and we now understand why. It is a rustic and spartan experience, yet as exclusive as you can get in Kruger, and fairly priced. Preparing dinner over a fire in the boma, sleeping with the splashing and snoring of hippos, listening to roaring lions in the distance, and enjoying a simple breakfast of coffee and rusks as the rising sun paints the horizon red. Magical. We’ll certainly go back to Shipandani without hesitation.

Ai ek geniet jou natuurstories.Dit doen mens se hart goed om te weet daar is jong mense wat nie net besig is met beroepe nie, maar ook balans hou deur die natuur hul eie te maak.
Jy is baie gaaf Dina!
Blissful!
Everyday should start and end in such a beautiful place, hey Tish?
Oh, if only. I’ll just use your posts to conjure them.
If I could, I’d go there to celebrate anything, too ! – and that’s because you’ve shown it to us.
Thank you Margaret-Rose 🙂
What a wonderful life you lead, thanks for sharing it.
Thanks very much for joining us on our travels guys!
How far in advance did you book? I have never been able to stay there as it is always full. Hope you had a great night.
We had a very good night’s rest, thanks Kelly. We were lucky to pick up a cancellation 6 weeks ago 😀

Thanks Lois! I hope it gave a sense of the beauty and serenity we experienced 🙂
The sounds you described are both intriguing and exciting at the same time. 🙂
You won’t believe how soothing all these sounds were Imelda. We slept like logs 🙂
