Genus Hypoxis
There is at least 90 species of plant in the genus Hypoxis, known colloquially as the Star Lily, with indigenous representatives being found in Australia, Asia, the Americas and sub-Saharan Africa. Almost half the known species are found in southern Africa. Most species occur in grasslands. They grow to about 50cm tall, with the star-shaped flowers – bright yellow in colour in the majority of species – being rather short lived. Leaves and flowers are only borne in the warmer months, with the plants overwintering through their underground rootstock. It is this rootstock that is used traditionally as food and medicine that gave the Star Lily its alternative name of African Potato, now even researched in western medicine as an immune booster.

Wow, Dries nou vat jy my ver terug na die tydperk wat ek ons melkbokke in oop weiveld laat wei het. Daardie tyd het ek nie besef dis eintlik ‘n lelie nie. Nou dat ek dit weer so sien kan ek aan blare sien dis ‘n lelie. Ek kannie onthou of bokke van hul gehou het of nie. Ons het wel wilde tulpe en dan ook tjienkerietjies uitgeroei omdat hul giftig was. Voordat die weiveld gebruik word in lente moes ons eers als deurloop. Wat doen jul oor Kersfees?
Dit moes n ongelooflike arbeids-intensiewe werk gewees het om n hele weiveld skoon te maak van gifplante, Ineke!
Ons vertrek eersdaags weer op n toer na n klomp van die parke en natuurreservate in die Wes en Oos Kaap. En julle?
Gelukkig het ons dit goed uitgeroei gehad. Ek’t steeds oë oop gehou as ek bokke laat wei het.
Dis te lekker om so te toer, veral dele wat jy nog nie baie besoek het nie. Weskus is uniek op sy eie.
Ek bly hierdie jaar tuis en gaan net 25 Des saam vriendinne middagete hê. Ek het afgelope 8 jaar altyd plase opgepas gedurende die Des/Jan breek. Laaste twee het ek net twee huise met katte en honde in dorp opgepas. Eks nie meer beweeglik genoeg om sulke dinge te doen nie. Word darem 79 jaar in Februarie! Tyd om bietjie rustiger te wees.
