Earlier this week Joubert and I quickly popped into the hide at the Austin Roberts Memorial Bird Sanctuary while we were whiling away a few minutes before attending to some other (more boring) chores. Despite the cold and overcast weather the little reserve was alive with birds of all description (as it always is!) and again we were amazed that such a precious place still exists inside one of the capital city’s oldest neighbourhoods.
The photographs are all courtesy of Joubert, while I was responsible for the videos.

The little egret was fun to watch, Dries. A busy little hunter!
Some herons and egrets stand stock still when hunting, but this one employs a very different strategy
So when I plan my dream trip to Kruger, is this worth putting on the itinerary? 🙂
If you have a few hours to spare between arriving in Johannesburg and transferring to Kruger Park then Austin Roberts is certainly a good place to spend it, Kathy!
Baie dankie, Corna!
Austin Roberts is inderdaad n “sanctuary” vir n ryk voellewe.
You are fortunate indeed not only to enjoy such a marvellous place but also to share it with your son – very special moments indeed.
That is so true, Anne. One of those blessings I count every day.
Well! The doves and the weavers don’t share well, do they?
Great dad and son effort on the post!
Thanks, Lois! It really is nice sharing our hobby and love for the outdoors!
