This past weekend saw us, accompanied by good friends and close family, heading to our local Rietvlei Nature Reserve to celebrate Joubert’s tenth birthday. The highlight of the day for Joubert and his mates was a tour to Rietvlei’s lions, with the birthday boy getting the seat of honour next to the very knowledgeable ranger-guide.

What a great birthday and I really enjoyed the photos. What a lot to see in one visit! The dusty zebras could be mistaken for a new species 🙂 Loved the cake too.
Thank you very much, Carol. We all had a great time and the birthday boy especially!
Great photos as always. Happy birthday to the young man!
Thank you very much, John!
Great pictures of the lark singing and the lioness licking her paws!
Thank you very much, Siobhan!
Dis darem wonderlik om jou verjaarsdag so te vier, in plaas van om in ‘n vervelige winkelsentrum rond te dwaal, soos meeste ander kinderpartytjies. Die koek is so oulik!
Baie dankie, Dina.
Amazing collection of photos 😁 I think my favourite was the Waterbuck Bull 🤔, but there were so many to choose from!
Thanks, Jez, and glad you found a few you liked in the mix!
Happy birthday, Joubert. Sounds like the perfect day followed by a cake I’d hate to cut! 😊

Thank you very much, Janet! It was a memorable day for all the best reasons.
I love the photo of the lazy lioness!! There is just something about a cat – big or small 💕
They do do lazy so well, don’t they!?
What a great trip! And love that cake…
Thanks a lot, Sue!
Beautiful images Dries and what a wonderful birthday treat for Joubert to see the lions 🦁 The cake looks amazing, such a fun idea too! 🙂🎂
Thanks very much, Xenia!
The best of birthday outings. The Groundscraper Thrush makes me feel nostalgic about my youthful stamping grounds. We don’t see them here.
Thank you Anne. As for the Groundscraper Thrush, we’ve been seeing them much more frequently recently – we even have a pair living on the sidewalks here in our neighbourhood!
Fantastic!
Very nice photos! It was a great birthday, the best he could get!😊
Thanks John! Joubert and his friends enjoyed it thoroughly. And we did too!
The birthday cake is adorable! The lazy lioness….you almost want to reach out and pet her, don’t you? Humanely removed the horn. That is a thing? I’m glad it deters poachers but, really, what a shame.
Thanks very much, Lois! The little cake-photographer was a present from one of Marilize’s very talented colleagues.
Joubert really managed to capture that lioness’s laziness perfectly, you can see in her eyes that she is utterly bored…
Sadly yes, in reserves with small populations of rhinos managers and vets now routinely remove the horns to protect them against rhino poachers. It is a very costly and time-consuming exercise and needs to be done regularly as the horn keeps growing out (it is made of the same stuff as nails and hair)
Joubert is a lucky boy having you as a father! What a birthday present! Fantastic!
What a great gallery of birds! It was my present! Thanks, D. 🙂
Thanks for your very kind words, H.J! We thank God every day for putting our little family together.
Amen.
