This morning, JacarandaFM – one of South Africa’s biggest radio stations – aired a humorous sketch based on one of our most hair-raising wildlife encounters and the events that followed in their breakfast show’s weekly “Story of my life” segment.
Unfortunately for most of our friends here at de Wets Wild the story is mostly in Afrikaans, our home language, but perhaps you’ll be able to catch the gist of it, which involves a swear word slipping out in an unguarded moment and being stored away in a little boy’s memory bank for later use…
Click here to listen to the piece.

Two of the three rhinos that caused the swearing at Ithala Game Reserve…

Well, I didn’t understand a word of it but really enjoyed hearing your language! It’s enough to know that the three rhinos were charging. Terrifying! Glad nothing bad happened. And, yes, kids will repeat most everything they hear! HA!
Glad to know you still found the piece enjoyable despite the language barrier, thank you Linda!
I’d probably say curse words more than a few times had three rhinos come charging at me too!!! Whew! I bet, only now, looking back at the incident, you’re laughing. Glad you are all safe.
Got our hearts racing for a while afterwards, that’s for sure!
Ha ha, dis nou rerig n ware verhaal! Jy moet maar “go with the flow” met hulle
Defnitief Ineke!
Ja, so jammer dat dit nie regtig so werk vandag nie!
Kids learn some things so quickly!
That’s the absolute truth Patti!
They look like giants.
They do Maamej, especially when charging unexpectedly!
Kinders hou mens darem op jou tone!
En hoe Dina! En hoe!
Funny story! Proof that one must be careful around children (and parrots)—and rhinos, for different reasons altogether! Would love to learn more about this adventure. Why did they charge, and how did you escape? J&A
Thanks guys!
We surprised the trio coming around a sharp bend on a steep rise, and that must have triggered the charge…
We had to reverse on that steep, bendy track for several kilometers (the road was too narrow to turn around), keeping just ahead of the ambling giants as they too made their way down the mountain along the road, before they finally relinquished it for long enough so that we could get past!
Baie dankie Tina! Lekker naweek daar in Polokwane!
😉 😀
Congratulation! Those were not your voice, right? Wouldn’t it be better if they were? 😉
I knew it is dangerous… 😉
Thanks very much Helen! No, the voices are DJs of the radio station. All a lot of fun!
Yeah, those slipped words, we joked a lot about happy his christening was on 3 months…for a while kar, kat, kam all ended with k and then came vark, vurk..at least it is now less of an issue, try a kid with the wrong k in woolies. You look, take, buy and go….hulle storm. Hehe.
Ja-Nee, die kinders hou n mens nederig ne!
I love where I live on the river, though the slow/no internet is the biggest ‘negative.’ i truly miss not being able to see every post, though one of these days faster options will arrive, and i’ll have fun catching up.
congratulations on being featured! you have a great life! z
We always appreciate every visit from you dear Z, you’ve been supporting us right from the start!
