You’ll know how excited we were at seeing the chameleon trying to cross the road, and what a shock it was when we realised that it had been killed by the extreme heat just 12 inches from the side of the road! Later in our visit we experienced the tar road actually melting near Shingwedzi. Pretoria just had probably the hottest day on record this week, at 42.5 Celsius. I don’t even want to imagine where it will end and how we, and the wildlife, will have to try and cope…
Agreed – it’s not looking good into the future – tho’ the boffs talk about resilience and adaptation. Maybe it will be back to Darwin’s theory and the survival of the fittest?
That’s probably true, but also probably means that we’ll lose enigmatic animals like the sable and roan antelope in the process, and that’s a terrible thought…
That’s pretty radical – makes one worry about the effects of global warming and the rate of species obliteration.
