One afternoon during our recent visit to Marakele National Park, while relaxing on the deck of our safari tent and enjoying the serenity of Tlopi Camp, this sizable herd of buffaloes visited their local waterhole for a drink. Joubert is responsible for all these pictures.

Coincidentally, on the National Geographic Channel, I saw a buffalo defend itself from a lion that was already at his throat. The buffalo lived and the lion had to find another meal.

Lions are the biggest threat to fully-grown buffaloes, but their meal is never guaranteed and lions are regularly injured and even killed when taking on buffaloes.

After watching the video I saw, I can certainly see it must be a hungry lion that might even attempt it.

You are right, H.J. African Buffaloes are notoriously ill-tempered and extremely powerful – not to be taken lightly!

Great photos, Joubert. That is quite a large herd of buffalo. I’m curious: their horns are as impressive as the rhino, yet they are not harmed for their horns as the rhinos are?
