Our new year got off to a great start when we encountered this lovely family of Bat-eared Foxes along the Link Road in the Mountain Zebra National Park on the 1st of January. At the den there were three very lively puppies and four adults who did everything they could to get the pups to hide away from the enamoured humans, without much success!

I can’t believe almost 3 months have passed since this encounter. The memory of it is still as vivid as if it were yesterday.

It was a unique experience so for sure it will stay with you. It is incredible that 3 months of the year have already gone by. (And that I am so behind with catching up reading!)

There’s no denying that they were having loads of fun and had absolutely no regard for the concerns of the adults!

They do, John! Not even prey hiding underground can escape those ears!

These bat-eared foxes must have a tremendous sense of earring, they have like a pair of parabolic antennas in their heads. They are cute little mammals. Thanks, D. 🙂

That’s exactly right, H.J. They use their extraordinary sense of hearing to detect prey under ground and then dig it out quickly.
