This Southern Ground Hornbill we saw along the S30 between Skukuza and Lower Sabie in the Kruger National Park came close enough to our vehicle to allow us to appreciate her eyelashes from up-close!
They’re also very intelligent, and I have a suspicion this particular bird has been fed from a vehicle at some stage, and that’s why she kept walking so close to us.
Fantastic bird with big eyes and long eyelashes! I have a soft spot for birds with a character heads!

Daar is baie wat sal dootslaan vir sulke wimpers!
Pretty lashes… I’m not so sure about the whole package! 😉

Great close-ups – such charismatic birds. So sad that their numbers have declined so dramatically over the past few decades

It truly is sad, Carol, and just proves again how desperately needed our system of national parks and nature reserves are!

Ja, maar dit lyk sulke harde reguit hare, hul sal mens se oë steek.

Duidelik het hulle sulke lang wimpers nodig om hul oe te beskerm wanneer hulle hul koppe in al wat n gat is druk op soek na kos.

They are rather scarce, but thankfully they still find protection in Kruger and hopefully you’ll get a few chances to see them when you visit!

Great lashes, but not the most attractive bird in the nest. 🙂 She certainly has an intense look, though.
