The northern parts of the Kruger National Park harbours populations of antelope rarely seen in the wild elsewhere in South Africa, and of course the Wild de Wets just love going in search of these special creatures. Our recent visit during the winter school holidays, basing ourselves for nine nights at Shingwedzi Rest Camp, yielded wonderful encounters with Eland, Nyala, Sharpe’s Grysbok and Tsessebe (and we’ll just have to get back there soon to find the roan antelope, sable antelope, lichtenstein’s hartebeest and reedbuck that eluded us!)
What a treat all of them! Even though we often see Nyala in northern Zululand reserves I never tire of seeing them. I love the headline photo of the Nyala ram.

Nyalas really are such stately antelope, and I honestly can’t imagine the KZN reserves without them!

Amazing pictures!😊 The nyala antelope is very beautiful and I think the female is little more beautify then the bull. Otherwise, it is usually the males are more beautiful because the females are more camouflaged. Your knowledge about the animals in South Africa is very impressive!😃

Thanks a lot, John!
I think the male and female nyalas make a dashing pair!

That is one exquisite photo of the nyala with its face in the sun. At first look I thought it was a kudu. So you’ve introduced me too a new animal too.

Glad we could, thanks Tish! The nyala is a close, and dare I say even more graceful, family member of the kudu.

One can always find a reason to return to the KNP! If you cannot think of one on the spot then go “because it is there” 🙂

I like the markings on the nyala legs…..kind of fascinating, aren’t they? And the eyelashes on the grysbok…!

The male nyalas especially look like they’re wearing socks! And the little grysbok is one of our favourites too.
