Treat

It doesn’t matter whether you wear clothes or feathers, no one can resist a picnic!

Marilize and Joubert had a family of yellow-billed hornbills join them for a picnic at Afsaal, in the Kruger National Park.

Gorgeous birds. But I have to ask, is that bill that large for a special reason? Is it something that is unique to this bird for feeding or just how they have evolved? Thanks for the pictures. most educational.

Thanks Dan. I suppose their bills are as large and hard as it is due to their diet, which includes hard-shelled insects, fruits and nuts, and to be used as a tool in searching for food and in nesting. We’re preparing a special post about our South African hornbills for this Friday, hopefully you’ll find it as interesting.

Did anyone tell them that sitting in the frying pan might not be the best idea they ever had? Not to mention the one on the burner! “Out of the frying pan and into the fire.”

We don’t either, Montucky. It’s strictly against Park policy to feed them, but they’ve become so adept at raiding picnic tables that they don’t need any help from us…

Rude birds…there’s some in every crowd. Around here it’s the jays. While camping in the nearby mountains this summer we had to keep a close eye on our food. Turn your back for a moment and your sandwich is gone!
Luckily, like these hornbills, they’re all beautiful
