Isilo was, towards the end of his life, the biggest tusker in South Africa, and our encounter with him at Tembe Elephant Park in May 2013 will forever be one of our most memorable wildlife experiences.
This is our third installment for the 5 Day Black-and-White Photo Challenge. Today we’d like to invite Dina of Perdebytjie se Nes, to join the challenge. She blogs in Afrikaans, our mother tongue, but you’ll need no translation to enjoy the fantastic photographs she shares on her blog! Dina, ons hoop jy sien jou weg oop om deel te neem maar dis geen probleem as jy nie kan nie, solank jy weet hoe baie ons jou blog geniet!
There are only two rules for this challenge:
1. On 5 consecutive days, create a post using either a past or recent photo in B&W.
2. Each day invite another blog friend to join in the fun.
Dis ‘n pragtige foto!Dankie daarvoor.

Once again, I think that black & white added to the emotion and grip of your photography. What a touching and personal story behind this powerful portrait. ❤

So he died of old age then? I was almost afraid to click through fearing there would be some horrible news of poachers.

Thankfully yes Barbara, Isilo died of old age. Unfortunately “robbers” got away with his tusks before the reserve authorities discovered his carcass.

Wow – ongelooflik wat B & W kan doen. Fotos lyk sommer weer nuut. Ja, dis jammer as mens erg raak oor diere, en hul is nie meer daar nie. Gelukkig het ons nog van hul fotos. Dis ‘n voorreg.

What a fantastic image! I’m so glad this old tusker has managed to evade the ivory poachers, and live to a ripe old age. 🙂

When we heard that Isilo passed away of old age it was an immense relief to us too, though the news that “robbers” got away with his tusks was a bitter pill to swallow.

What a mighty tusker!!!
It’s always a special feel to get close to elephants, the sheer size simply overwhelms us 🙂
Very nice selection for the challenge 🙂

I agree with you entirely about elephants, and big tuskers like Isilo just so much more.
